Two topical issues of the history of medieval Taurica stand out in extensive range of research interests of the prominent Soviet archaeologist Vladislav Vsevolodovich Kropotkin – the ethnic genesis of the South-Western Crimea population and the discussion about the localization of Phoulloi. V.V. Kropotkin’s research on the problems considered in the article was based on a thorough and comprehensive analysis of archaeological materials, written sources, as well as Russian and foreign literature. The researcher concluded that the early medieval necropolises of the Mountainous Crimea belonged to the Alans-Goths, who had become assimilated with the remaining local Scythian-Sarmatian population, and argued for the localization of the city of Phoulloi on Tepsen Hill in Koktebel.
